HP Sauce

Kate blogged about the HP sauce scandal today. I must admit I knew nothing about it until I read the post, but I share her outrage. I love my HP, and although I won’t go as far as Kate did and say that I won’t eat certain meals without brown sauce, fish and chips won’t be the same without it. Nor will cheese on toast, sausages off the BBQ or scrambled eggs.

I have this much left in the bottle in the pantry but will be visiting Safeway Highton tomorrow night to stockpile. Here’s hoping that news of the debacle hasn’t reached Geelong yet.

******* Update *******

9.18pm Just back from Safeway. I decided that I couldn’t risk waiting until tomorrow night. Lucky I didn’t. I bought 10 bottles and left only two on the shelf. The checkout chick even said that her Dad bought heaps the other day too and she gave me two shopping bags because “it would be terrible if one broke and you dropped them all”.

Fish and chips tomorrow night.

Mum actually…. I’ve only just read your blog and Kate’s. We bought up big in May but WE ONLY HAVE THREE LEFT! Dad’s going shopping in the morning so shush until after that!
Once upon a time Karen & Nick described us as quirky.
I think you all inherited quirky!
However, this is a serious issue - much like the horrific Bovril crisis of 2005. Initially we resisted the new version and just went without in good old British tradition. Finally we gave in becasue the new yeast flavoured one is still better than Marmite or even vegemite (do they withdraw my Australian citizenship if I say that?) but it’s taken 18 months of determined effort to grow accustomed to the new beefless flavour. I think Dad still has an empty original bottle in the back of the pantry to sniff when the craving is overwhelming.
At least we know what to get Kate for her 30th birthday!

Good one! - I just bought Kate 30 bottles and now you’ve wrecked the surprise!!!!

Just kidding - if I’d bought that much, I’d probably be selling them on Ebay!
    Sorry Kate!

What a laugh, I might start selling some T-Shirts I think.

    Rob.

    What’s on the t-shirts?

I reckon selling them on ebay is a great idea, in coming months. The bottle I bought on ebay the other day is a 425mls squeezy one (normal ones here are 250mls) so its a bit different to the bottle here. Matt reckons if I find more bottles in the supermarket here, we should put the Ebay one in the glass cabinet, on display, as in “this is going straight to the pool room”!

The guy selling the HP was also selling Angel Delight, Branston Pickle spreadable, and some proper salad dressing. Maybe we should start doing that here, selling Australian food to poms who can’t buy them over there- we could make a fortune!

Off to browse the Milk Bars and small family-run grocery stores today, seeing as the big supermarket chains are all out.

Here you go… Just for a laugh, I’ll put some designs on http://www.cafepress.com/hpsauce for the world to buy!
You never know your luck in the big city!

It’s a US site so in US dollars, but they print your designs onto heaps of different stuff.

So if you want one, buy one and I’ll make a couple of bucks.

Kate - there are already shops and online stores here that resell English stuff and no doubt the same thing happens in the UK with VB, Vegemite etc etc. This is different. A product is being deleted for ever.

I didn’t buy those bottles last night to sell them. I bought them so that I can continue to consume HP for as long as possible!

Had second thoughts RE copyright/trademarks on the above link so pulled the designs off - so ignore my last post.

I think I will make a couple of shirts though - I quite like this one.

you guys are all as nuts as each other (and us?). We like the sauce-writing version though. See my comments on Kate’s sauce blog - Werribee seems to be awash with theOriginal sauce at present!

who are you people and what have you done with my family!?
does anyone here work during the day? :)
you need a clever line like:

I love saucy behaviour (with the bottle on it…)
or rip off the I love NY logo. :)

I love the flag one, Rob! Can I put in an order? I’ve just had a friend in Taree (a few hours north of us) email me to tell me she’s bought some HP at her local supermarket for me! Maybe we’re being restocked, I’ll have to check around here again.

Maybe it’s all a viral marketing campaign by Heinz to get us to buy heaps of sauce.
